The results are in for the 2010 MTV Movie Awards, and New Moon took the cake . . . or popcorn. Last year, Twilight won for Best Kiss, and this year, the second movie in the series was nominated for more awards than pretty much every other movie out there (and the cast was nominated for best kiss and more in other non-vampy roles). And it won everything it got a nod for. According to MTV and the fan site His Golden Eyes, New Moon and it's co-stars (who played in other movies, too) won:
Best Female Performance: Kristen Stewart
Best Female Breakout Performance: Anna Kendrick
Best Kiss: Robert Pattinson & Kristen Stewart
Best Global Superstar: Robert Pattinson
Best Male Performance: Robert Pattinson
Best Movie: The Twilight Saga: New Moon
For the fake-out almost kiss at the podium between Stewart and Pattinson, the real-life, Bella-like clumsy move K.S. made walking up to get the award, and Daddy Cullen dropping the f-bomb without censorship (whoops, MTV!) check out His Golden's Eyes' MTV Awards Master Post.
[Note: Be forewarned! Kristen Stewart's look is Pretty Woman meets pseudo-goth again. Does she actually pay a stylist? I hope not.]
Other well-deserving vampires in the world of television, however, were snubbed on a few fronts. The fabulous and ever-popular True Blood was nominated for best International show by the Philips British Academy Television Awards, which took place on Sunday, June 6.
It only makes sense, especially as the show, an HBO version of Charlaine Harris's Southern Vampire Mysteries/Sookie Stackhouse Novels, stars cast members from England, Sweden, Australia and more.
They contended against Family Guy, Mad Men, and Nurse Jackie (never heard of it), but Mad Men, a horrid show with no redeeming qualities in its characters won. No wonder we started our own country when the BAFTA has taste like that!
And I'm not sure that I want to even get started on the SFX list of the Top 50 Vampires as voted on by the readers. The list was pretty hit-and-miss overall. However, I love that sexy, bad boy from Buffy, Spike (James Marsters), was number one. Here's what SFX has to say about the bleach blond vampire:
Played by: James Marsters
Undead in: Buffy The Vampire Slayer (1997-2003), Angel (1999-2004)
"The old adage appears to be true – we all love a bad boy. Born of posh stock in 18th Century London (we can assume his mockney Guy Ritchie-style accent was an affectation he adopted later – which might also explain why it occasionally wobbled slightly), Spike made his first appearance in Sunnydale in season two. He quickly made himself as much loved among the fans as he was (initially) hated by the Slayer and her Scoobies.
So what makes him so popular – other than cheekbones sharp enough to cut cheese on? An antihero in the true sense of the word, Spike is morally ambiguous and ready to fight pretty much anyone, for fun. But underneath it all, he loves deeply and earnestly in a way that remains achingly human. Although, ironically, his personality remains pretty much the same, whether he has a soul or not – in stark (and more entertaining) contrast to Angel.
He’s not as broody as most of the other vamps, with a quick sarcastic wit and a barrage of pop culture references for every occasion. He’s funny and, frankly, the kind of person it’d be a laugh to have a beer and play a few hands of kitten poker with, even if you couldn’t guarantee he wouldn’t try to kill you later. He’s also the only vamp on our list who’s got away with using the word “wanker” on US network TV. Yeah, it’s not big or clever, but you couldn’t imagine Dracula getting away with that".
The top 10 vampires, as voted by the readers were:
1. Spike from Buffy, Angel
2. Dracula as played by Christopher Lee (who?) in Dracula (1958), Dracula: Prince Of Darkness (1966), Dracula Has Risen From The Grave (1968), Count Dracula (1970), Taste The Blood Of Dracula (1970), One More Time (1970), Scars Of Dracula (1970), Dracula AD 1972 (1972), The Satanic Rites Of Dracula (1973), Dracula And Son (1976)
3. David Boreanaz as Angel/Angelus, the vamp with a soul in Buffy The Vampire Slayer (1997-2003), Angel (1999-2004).
4. Mick St John (who?) by actor Alex O’Loughlin (again, who?) in Moonlight (2007-8).
5. David as portrayed by Kiefer Sutherland in the 80s cult classic, The Lost Boys.
6. Graf Orlok played by Max Schreck in the 1922 film Nosferatu, eine Symphonie des Grauens
7. Gary Oldman in Bram Stoker’s Dracula,
8. Tom Cruise as Lestat de Lioncourt,
9. Selene, the sexy Underworld vamp portrayed by Kate Beckinsale.
10. Drusilla, Spike's sometimes honey on Buffy, played by Juliet Landau
Loves:
1. That Buffy got so much love!
2. That Kate Beckinsale made the top 10.
3. That Bill Nighy's Underworld villain character made top 20.
4. That True Blood made the list at all.
5. That SFX didn't snub foreign movies.
Hates:
1. True Blood snubs. Eric Northman (Alexander Skarsgård) was number 41. His good looks and deviant nature should at least place him >#20. Bill Compton (Stephen Moyer) of wasn't even any True Blood on this one, as he came in 27th. Have you people heard him say the name "Sookie"? Do all vampires have to be 17 and pining now (aka Twlight and Vampire Diaries)?
2. No love for child vamps. Interview's Claudia, played by Kirsten Dunst, was number 48. Eli, played by Lina Leandersson in the 2008 Swedish film, Let The Right One In was 34th. It's an original take and very anti-Twilight. These chicks deserve a little more love.
3. Anne Rice's Louis de Pointe du Lac, the sexy brooder portrayed by Brad Pitt in Interview With The Vampire was ranked 24th? Must I even explain why this is wrong? And no Armand at all? Boo!
4. Robert Pattinson's character Edward Cullen was number 14. See post about MTV Movie Awards. Like Twilight or not, you have to admit that listing Team Edward out of the top 10 is going to cause some problems with the ladies.
5. Putting the Sesame Street count in the top 20. Saying Blade is better than the Dracula portrayed by Lugosi, the most famous depiction of the Dark Prince? Please. Were SFX fans smoking crack?
