I am marrying a man that despises spending money. I come from a family of bargain hunters. We're so into saving as much as we can that I often text him asking, "Guess how much I saved at Kroger between the Plus Card and coupons?" I often get the response "Awesome!" when I tell him I save an average of $40 to $80 that way. Including the cats and us, our grocery bill sans alcohol is about $150 per month.
What's more awesome than cards and coupons? There are secrets to saving more on top of sale prices that some people might never think about.
When it comes to travel, I collect the soaps and shampoos in my hotel room when I travel each night. That way, a new set arrives each morning I'm there. I also visit sites such as Walmart and Teen Freeway to get coupons as well as free items (and links to free items) such as magazines, snacks, cat food samples, perfume and travel shampoos. Then, when I travel, or have guests, I have some pretty cool mini-items.
I also abuse the coupon system as much as possible while still following the rules. Places such as Walgreens have coupons, but will also take manufacturer's coupons on top of store coupons and sales. For example, when I cut out John Frieda coupons for $1 off a product, I wait until the product I want goes on sale as a BOGO or buy one get one 50% off, like at Walgreens or Publix. Then, I use one $1 manufacture's coupon per item.
And yes, you can use a coupon on a free item. That means if I buy a $3 hair product, get one free, then have $2 in coupons, I get both for $1! A lot of businesses will let you use as many coupons as you want as long as the register will take it. You might as well try. What's the worst that can happen? They say no and you seem cheap?
