I love scarves. These neck decorations used to be popular in the 80s and for ladies in their 80s, but times have changed. Scarves, I've found are to female professors what jackets with patches at the elbows are to our male counterparts. A scarf adds maturity and dresses up an outfit. It gives a punk rocker feel to men and women's T-shirt and jeans ensembles.
The best place to find scarves are Forever 21, Etsy, Kmart and Overstock. I also urge you to go to stores in person rather than just online. I went to Kmart a few weeks ago and found a gorgeous turquoise scarf on clearance with a velvet, purple peacock feather on it for under $5. I also found a purple and black checkered scarf and scarfs with skulls on them that I purchased as gifts for my teenage cousins. I found there's a Scarfworld online, I wasn't impressed. In addition, Googling scarves brings strange results -- such as the site "Stuff White People Like" (really, that's what it's called).
However, the way you wear your scarf can make or break you. Wear it with a brooch and you might look like an old lady. Let it hang and it might look too casual for work. Tie it in a knot and you may look like someone from Knot's Landing. What hip ways can you wear a scarf? Many! Take a look at these examples or visit this site for tying instructions.
Some of my favorite scarves:
Juicy Couture Ruffle Scarf W/Lure $58 at Zappos
Route 66 Scarf $7
Roxy Scarf on 6pm.com for $18
Forever 21 $3.50
