When I was initially looking at wedding favors, I talked to a lot of people who said that favors just get tossed aside at receptions. However, at $2-$5 a pop, sometimes more, why put out things people aren't going to use?
I originally got the DIY matchbook idea from my MOH, who sent me this Style Me Pretty link. I figured it would be a good way to combine fall decor into our favors (we're having other favors as well) and is appropriate because the ceremony will be outside and the guests will be able to light their candles when night falls.
To get this look, I went to Michael's and Hobby Lobby and chose scrapbook paper. This is especially affordable when Hobby Lobby has 50% off sales on scrapbooking paper and you can get paper for 15 cents. One large scrapbook sheet can make about 10 matchbook covers.
In addition, I found that the Diamond brand matchbooks work better than Kroger's brand (because it's easier to unfold the Diamond brand). Sometimes, once the paper makes the cardboard heavy, it's hard to get the matchbooks back together with glue. To help seal the books tightly and add some fancy decoration, I tied raffetta around the books. Raffetta is very cheap, but I liked that it made the matchbooks look like actual books -- which is going to be a part of the reception theme.
