Though I wasn't very happy with Real Simple after they duplicated their wedding issue, I am giving up the grudge to give them props for their spring fireplace piece. Currently, our fireplace is non-working. The reason? When the last owner sold the home, we asked to have the chimney cleaned and he discovered a crack. We were advised to have it fixed before we used it. Now that it's warming up, however, we won't need it.
Real Simple, however, inspired me to look into decor ideas.

Liked this HGTV example of how to build a mantle since all we have is a fireplace with a shelf over it. I want to do this because our "mantle" looks more like a shelf. What do you guys think?
