Bun in the oven, knocked up, preggo, got the belly bump, renting a room -- call it what you will, but it seems that everyone on Facebook is either pregnant or has recently had a baby.
Maybe it just seems that way since FB has over 400 million users now, but the number of new mommies and daddies seem staggering.
Let me get one answer out of the way. No, I am not pregnant. In fact, my slight hypochondria makes me fear expecting women. I know it’s not how it happens, but I’m afraid that those “in a family way” are contagious. One woman gets preggers and it takes off like wildfire!
Though I’m waiting for the mommy-to-be FB status, I know of some interesting trends pregnant ladies and those who have recently brought home little ones might be interested in. It's mommy-baby chic!
Photo Sessions
One thing I love is belly painting. I know people have seen 184,638,473,874 black and white pictures of women with exposed bellies, but former face painters are becoming recognized for their bump art. Time Magazine did a piece on the art, including this Arabic protection symbol by
I also saw henna tattoos on baby bumps, which looked awesome, but it alarmed me because I recently read some horrific stories about allergic reactions to the temporary tattoos. Being a former journalist, I researched this on Snopes. Apparently, this urban legend is true, dependent upon whether the henna is pure henna or “black henna”. But why risk it with a baby inside your belly? Regardless, I loved the belly photos on this blog.
If you’re looking for inspiration look at MelBueno’s stuff or hire a very talented photographer from my high school, Shea. Her stuff is beautiful, especially when it comes to snapping shots of newborns. Here are a few screenshots from her blog on her site (Don't sue me, Shea! I know it's copyrighted!):
Stylish Digs and Shindigs
I’ve heard that pregnant women want to be comfortable, but they don’t want to give up fashion/look like they are wearing sweatpants 24/7. While it’s not the cheapest (dresses seem to be $29 and up) Pea in the Pod has some great, fashionable clothing for work, church, etc. Heidi Klum is even getting in on the action.
I’ve also fallen in love with these kids clothes, but they’re not always the cheapest. The site is self-admittedly catering to parents who want designer-type mix and match clothing. They do, however, have the occasional $250 giveaway.
